Przemysław Chmiel

Przemysław Chmiel – improvising instrumentalist (tenor and soprano saxophones, bass clarinet) and composer. Curent student of Jazz Institute on the Academy of Music in Katowice.

Chmiel is a winner of numerous awards, such as: individual Second Prize at IX International Jazz Improvisation Competition in Katowice, individual First Prize at Tarnów Jazz Contest 2018, Secondary Award in a small ansamble category at 2018 Blue Note Poznań Competition.

In 2019 Chmiel appeared in two albums – ,,Bajka” by Natalia Kordiak Quintet (released by Hevhetia) and ,,Słowo na T.” by Sabina Meck Sextet. Both of the albums got enthusiastic reviews and were called one of the best vocal albums of the 2019. Natalia Kordiak’s ,,Bajka” was also nominated for the Award of the Polish Phonography Academy – ,,Fryderyk” for The Best Jazz Debut of the Year.

As a member of several young polish jazz bands, Chmiel was performing, among others, in Poland (Jazztrzębie Jazz Festival, Jazz in Ruins Festival), Czech Republic (Voicingers on Tour in Jazz Dock, Prague) and Spain (Ni CaJazz! Festival in Alcanadre).

In september of 2020 his phonographic debut entitled ,,Witchcraft” was released by Listen! Foundation (FSRecords). The album has been already recognized as one of the best jazz/improvising debut of the year. ,,Witchcraft” was highly inspired by greats jazz legends but Chmiel’s Quartet added to the music their own thoughts and ideas. The album is an intersting mix of contemporary jazz, avant-garde improvisation and other music genres. Chmiel’s music is all about energy, youth, expression and honesty.
